May is a cheerful girl and the daughter of Professor Birch from the Hoenn region. She's great at taking care of others and loves cute Pokémon and conducting fieldwork.
Her Pokémon Adventures counterpart is Sapphire who has fangs, sharp fingernails, sharp toenails and sports on occasion a leaf bikini and grass skirt, but mostly during fieldwork and other special occasions. If she doesn't wear a bandana, she sports an topknot, which strongly resembles a chasenmage. Her hair in general is slightly more desaturated and darker. During the Emerald Arc, she wears a blue variant of the official clothing set for Pokemon Emerald, of which she also wears during the late chapters of the RubySapphire Arc. Starting from the ORAS Arc, her hair has darkened down considerably as seen on the cover of Volume 63 of Pokemon Adventures and sports now a short ponytail.
