On her left hand she wears a singleblack glove, an oblique reference to the injuries to the left hand sustained by her captain, Commander Ernest E. Evans, including losing two fingers. Draped on her left upper arm is the Medal of Honor, referencing the one posthumously awarded to Commander Evans for his actions in the Battle off Samar.
Her rigging consists of two smokestacks and three of her Mark 12 5-inch/38 caliber gunturrets, with one set on each side of her rigging and a third handheld turret in her right hand. Her hull number is emblazoned on each side of her lower rigs.
Her namesake is Navy Lieutenant John V. Johnston, who fought for the Union from 1862 to 1864 during the American Civil War. She is the game's first bona fide American destroyer, despite the fact that destroyer escort Samuel B. Roberts was already classified as a destroyer in the game.
