Artist's commentary
Cape Aonae, Okushiri Island 1880
In 1880, the Iron Duke, flagship of the British Eastern Fleet, ran aground at Aonae Cape on Okushiri Island, Hokkaido, en route to Aniva Bay on Sakhalin Island. At the time, Prince Arisugawa Takehito, who was a naval ensign aboard the Iron Duke, led the islanders in a rescue operation.
