ironclad

A type of warship prevalent in the latter half of the 19th century. Characterized by their iron, usually sloped armor (although later ones have steel armor, or some composite of the two) and use of coal powered steam power (although many earlier ones also kept sails for back up or fuel saving reasons).

They were later superseded by pre-dreadnought battleship.
