News coming in reports its a controlled leak to ease pressure off the reactor.
Thank goodness they have contingency plans that work for the most part. A earthquake with just a 3rd of that magnitude would send this rathole I live in back to the Dark Ages. Best of luck to the Japanese people. May they find the resolve to overcome this tragedy and resume their daily lives as quickly as possible. My thoughts and prayers go out to them on this difficult time.
I just had a whole news session over this quake... goddamn, the damage is terrible. There are even people I know who have family in Japan and haven't been able to contact them yet. And all those poor people who got caught in that flash tsunami... man, it's been a bad few days for Japan.

I'm in the same predicament. The people from my brother's Japanese exchange program, whom I've known for only a short time, I've gotten a sudden feeling of distress for them. Currently, I am not getting any replies from them. Still, I wish good luck to them, and the rest of Japan.

I have a junior of mine studying in Japan right now and she just called me 2 days ago before the disaster hit. I wish she is safe now, since she told me that she would be back on wednesday next week ; _ ;
Good luck to Japan from Hong Kong. Heard that the reactor in Fukushima isn't looking good, but as far as it goes, the worst case probable is probably just a loss of a reactor. Also hopes that people from those destroyed towns survived this horrifying disaster.

And the radiation. And now reactor No.3 cooling system failed. Hopefully, they can get that one under control and keep others failing as soon as possible.

Good luck Japan, from Denmark. I know the loss and tragedy is unimaginable, but as one reporter said on Danish TV: If there was one country in the world where an earthquake of this magnitude should strike, then it should be Japan. No other country in the world could have coped with it and had it happened anywhere else, the damage and loss of life would have been orders of magnitude worse. You prepared for this situation for decades and now all that training and preparation really made a difference. You Japanese can all be proud of yourself. Ganbatte, Japan.

As others have said, this is like a not-so-subtle reminder by Mother Nature that she is merely allowing us to live on this Earth, and that should she so decide, we can easily be removed from that same Earth.
I hope with all sincerity that the nuclear reactors at the affected power plants also hold strong. All the best to Japan from Pennsylvania, here in the United States.

And looking at all of these comments has reminded me of the power of the internet. It's true power is to connect people from around the world in communities and share their ideas and strengths to create something absolutely WONDERFUL.
My prayers to each and every one of the people currently rendering aid to those in need. My prayers to each and every one of the people at the plants currently trying to prevent further disaster (especially now). And my prayers to each and every one of the people of Japan, that they can find a way to get through this and get back on their feet, no matter what happens.
Those 50 technicians who are staying behind to keep that plant going have some serious cajones. They deserve some sort of freakin' reward for their bravery.
