    Disregarding the etymological discussion of whether a thumb is a finger, because this is very dependent on your language;
    But if you are talking about Ellen's left hand (our right), her thumb would be on the right of her hand (our left) and placed slightly further back.
    Given that her hand is slightly twisted, her thumb being obscured and therefore not visible makes sense.
