The tragic part is that he didn't start out that bad: he was a (ridiculously) angsty, angry warrior dude, and somewhere along the way the writers forgot all that and turned him into a humorless Freddy Krueger. There's slicing, stabbing, ripping, tearing, and no POINT to it all. "GRRR, I'M ANGRY...BECAUSE I'M ANGRY!" And the entire Greek Pantheon goes "lol k" and seems to oppose him just because they'd like a little of Mount Olympus left as opposed to an enormous smoking crater.
He wasn't even that awesome a character in Broken Destiny. There. I said it.
God of War is basically a love-hate relationship for me. The gameplay is seriously fun and awesome, but every time it goes to a cutscene I keep wishing Kratos would die in the most horrible ways.

You didn't play pay attention to the backstory of God of War 1 then. Ten year prior to God of War 1, Kratos was basically the Greek pantheon's bitch as he went from god to god seeking a cure for his nightmares. Prior to that, he was the murder-machine enslaved Ares which ultimately got his family killed. Prior to THAT, he was a spartan soldier in service of the Greek gods in general.
Kratos is not good character going down the "bad path", Kratos is a bad character going down the "worst end" path.

I guess many gamers just want a "badass being badass.' Doesn't matter who the character actually is.
Fucking greek bitches get stomped by spartan. Simple as that. BTW, that game(GOW\and yes, Gears of War too) was made out of pure testosterone, what did you expect? Kratos is awesome because he's awesome. It's ἀξίωμα.

Go one, vote me down
It is a matter of choice and personal likings. But let yourself ask this question: If your whole family got killed BY you b/c you were tricked to do things, what would you do to the guy who tricked you? And those who are around you are PRETENDING to help you but in the end are using you, how would you treat them at the end? That's what Kratos is all about. He is one of those specific logic/tragedy driven person. I would take him over many known famous literature characters any time. Again, it is a personal choice.

If you want that much details, then 1) U can read a book, one of the best form of entertainment, but not for our generation sadly. or 2) go and pick your fav game character and ask if that character is as well defined as it should be. Very few game characters are well defined by whatever logic are being used to define them, but in the end even that haunts them for being 'overly dramatic' or 'too much emotion' etc. Snake from MGS is a good example. Take MGS4 for instance and look at the cutscenes.

And in a half-way "Hilarious in Hindsight" sort of way... Guess who's going to be available exclusively for the PS3 version of the Mortal Kombat reboot.

Nope. It's kinda how the second half of his 1st Fatality begins, but it's not what I'd call HiH.
I've actually thought that a Soul Calibur x Legacy of Kain crossover would be the shit. Perhaps the Soul swords have managed to make contact with Nosgoth, not unlike how they did with Hyrule? The Elder God sees them as competition trying to muscle into his territory, while Kain sees them as a threat to his growing power, or possibly as a way to empower the Soul Reaver and do away with the Elder God for good. As well, the Soul swords making contact with the Soul Reaver could be used as an excuse to give Raziel a body again.
