Because usually the target gets plenty of in-story consideration, such as in this one. And when the joke goes on long enough, it can end up feeling like the character's attraction just exists to get their ass kicked.

Not that that even really applies in this case, feeling bad for the birdie does not prevent feeling bad for the puppy.
