Context: Nintendo announced the voice cast for the animated Mario movie they're doing with Illumination, which mostly consists of pretty big name American celebrities - including Chris Pratt as Mario and Jack Black as Bowser.
The movie's coming out next December and doesn't seem to have a full title yet.
I believe the casting list also included Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong just to name a few more interesting choices. So all in all it looks to be simultaneously the best AND the worst thing ever created.
If Chris Pratt can voice Mario, anyone can voice Mario.
That was my immediate thought. While I'm reserving judgement until the movie comes out, there's really nothing about Pratt up until this point that made me think "this guy ought to be the one voicing Mario". (Especially when the usual voice of Mario will be in the movie anyways...)
My major guff with this, is that it feels like another case of snubbing voice actors to bring in "real" actors whenever something gets a big budget. And that annoys me way more than the specific choice of actors (Although I also have "opinions" there too)
Though I suppose I'll extend to this the same courtesy I gave the Sonic movie and wait to see the trailer before I really start my hootin' and a hollerin'.

Yep, this exactly.
It's all about buying big names to slap on a movie poster strictly for marketing. Hollywood is where creative integrity goes to die.

Speaking of, if only DC can just take their animation directors/scriptwriters and ask them to make the live-action movies...
