Chuushi
(a.k.a. Houshitsu)Geshi
(a.k.a. Houkyou)This is where we get the phrase "a worm's report" to mean foreboding. The worms are constantly working against us....she says.
Hmm, I see
We're going to stay up through the whole night so these worms can't leave and tattle on us.We'll pass the time talking and drinking.
Virtues
Hee...Joushi
(a.k.a. Houko)Some people spend the night of koushin without sleeping, a ritual called the koushinmatsu.
It's said that this way you can keep in check the "three worms" that live inside you.
The three worms burrow into your head, stomach and feet respectively and leave your body every sixty days to report your misdeeds to the yama. The yama reduces our lifespan according to our deeds, and sinners are quickly sent off to Hell.
Because the worms go free when their host dies, they're really hard workers and delighted to see people do evil. The reason Hell exists is not to punish the deceased, but to keep the living away from sin. By trying to act virtuous while they're still alive, humans can improve their fleeting short lives as well.
