To be fair, they'd have gone to waste and lost a ship if they didn't collect it, but I guess we can't have one of these without someone being a butt monkey and getting punished by Akagi.

It's not that she minds that they collected the ship and its cargo, it's that they took credit (possibly just by remaining silent) for having collected said cargo through their own efforts.

Yes, but that again just begs the question of why they wouldn't just say they found that ship when they would've gotten away with it if they had. Wo and Haruna obviously must have collected more than enough for both parties, anyway, so further searching would have been wasted. The only answer is the meta-textual "because someone has to get punished".
