Can confirm, have done exactly this.

Thankfully, one's bag is often fairly empty on the train to your destination...

But I'd hate to have to commute every day like that...

With an abyssal-conversion process like that, the war will never end.

This is rush hour in Tokyo. Also happens during 2200-2400 after a night out.

Only on certain lines... Or you can sensible like one of my friends, and work in Yokohama while living in Tokyo - and get to see the packed-to-the-gills trains going the other way every day...

I had a genius plan like that once of living in the city and working in the suburb. The only flaw was I worked a 12hr night shift, so I got reverse rush hour.

Explains why the Abyssals are trashing everything.

We do this where I live too. Once, a guy did a running start to push the rest of us in. As the one directly receiving the impact, it was interesting to say the least.

They should just be happy that the doors closed. Our trains are so old and rusty that sometimes the doors don't close at all so we have to keep pushing against the top and hope that the guys behind us don't get twitchy while the train's moving.

Feels like this in NYC, too (though probably not as bad as in Japan). Though shouldn't Yuubari be putting her bag on the ground instead of in front of her like that? (Allows for more standing room)

Never, ever let go of your bag. In full rush hour, it's likely to get stood on accidentally. Or crushed. It's juts not safe.

Also, if you're pushed up against the doors like that, there's a decent chance that it could fall/get pushed out at the next stop...

    Wow, that bad, huh?
Now I have an appreciation over how much space we have in our trains. It's not that packed during rush hours such that you have to resort to the technique above, but it is packed enough for you to smell the horrid sweat of hardworking immigrants and salary workers when the sun goes down. It is also packed enough to warrant a female only coach for every train in order to provide a safezone for women.

Bullshit. Where are train attendants shoving people in with a stick?

Except when accident, or signaling problem, or train running off track, or tree falling on rail, or power supply failure, or flooded station, or motorbiker killed for trespassing railway, caused a delay that made next train packs 2-3 schedule worth of passengers :)

There's also the more common waiting for long distance train to clear the track so commuter train can pass.

I don't use public transportation every day so I don't really know the ire behind it But when you put it that way... I'll just quote Graf.

People are expected to do that in Parisian trains and metros during rush hour, but nobody does it because :
    a) some a**hat will use the split second before the door closes to throw your bag out or snatch it, doubly so on lines with anti-suicide doors
    b) nobody bothers taking their bag off

Ugh I had to do that back when I was still able to work. And go out of the house unassisted. Even at 8:30pm the Manchester to Blackpool North train was in sardine mode, and it didn't help that if you missed that train the next one wasn't for at least another hour...

The train arriving on track 2 is the Express bound for Tokyo.
Carry your belongings in front, and put your hands around the door.
    You get on back-first.
The next train is already coming!?
     EXPRESS   T O K Y O
Let's flag it and take the next train...
That's the pride of Japan - an overstuffed train schedule.
    We can get on.
    Everyone has dead eyes...
    See? We're on.
And then cram yourself in backwards with your body.
Mein Gott... they're packed like sardines!
