The historical IJN Katori was sunk in Operation Hailstone, (AKA The Raid on Truk Harbor to the Japanese,) under the bombardment of the American battleship USS Iowa on the 17th of February, 1944.

WOW. The inclusion of the US Navy ship girls could mean two things:

    1. They're slowly replacing the Abyssals as enemy ship girls since the Abyssals were to be a sort of representation of the US Navy ship girls.

    2. Kadokawa Games are having plans to translate the PS Vita and browser versions of Kantai Collection in English with a proper localization team.

Also Katori was denying the fact that she have met Iowa before and was bullied with bombardment.

It wasn't even bullying. She was Iowa's practice target. Katori was essentially a roadkill.

The Abyssals were never officially meant to represent US ships alone. It was just player conjecture based on the equipment and measurements used, and even then they could have been ships from any of the Allied nations. There was also the early announcement that the devs wanted to make ships from both sides usable.

I suggest you to read the official 4koma "Fubuki ganbarimasu!". Since the very beginning it was stated abyssals come from a ship girl "malice". It's still vague, but it assures enemies weren't meant to be Allies' shipgirls.

Oh! and in case you wonder. That explanations exists from more than 2 years ago.

That plus they were gonna run out of Axis ships at some point. Anyone with rudimentary knowledge of WWII naval history would have seen this coming a (nautical) mile away.

I just want to know when the Enterprise is coming.

Just a note: KDKW is putting out a recruitment drive for translators. If you have good Japanese and English skills, now's your chance.

Not at all, Iowa. This is your first meeting with the training cruiser, this is your first interaction with Katori and you most certainly did not blast her with HEHC during Operation Hailstone back in your past life.

Good for you two to work together from now on.

I may not know a lot of Japanese (I don't even speak it) but I can definitely rewrite the worst Engrish from a Japanese into proper sounding English sentence, provided I am told the context of the sentence and word beforehand.

    I'm definitely interested in this.

nah, the US consider torp on ship to be too dangerous for its benefit so they remove their torp from the cruiser and only leave it on the dd. Instead they love to use their aim-bot gun to bombard enemy from afar while their enemy lack any real way to hit them back without closing the gap eventhough Japan ship tend to have longer maximum range. Read battle of Leyte Gulf, the destroyer escort was able to to deal so much damage to make the Jap think that they were engaging main escort fleet of the carrier.
TL;DR to murican torp suck, automatically aimed gun ruled

They actually have good torpedo that could have been used at the onset of the war if they weren't so averse to handle hydrogen peroxide at the beginning...which they seems to be less averse later on...

early on the war US torp were the unholy child between failure and ineffective. They often break down midway and even when hit they often fail to detonate. After improving for a while it become better but still bear too much risk compare to its benefit so only sub, dd and TB use it. And even later on the war it still suck compare to its Japan counterpart

I was referring to the Mark 17 torpedo...that would have been a 2nd-best torp in the war behind Type 93 (~16km range at 46 knot speed)...but, you know, hydrogen peroxide. Which is weird, because later on they used Mark 16 on submarines...which have said H2O2....

That wasn't the issue the problem was war was felt to be imminent by this point (the go no go choice was being made in late 1941) and there was only one factory for torpedoes in the entire country. To start production of the new torpedo which was effectively finished would have required shutting down and retooling that single factory and thus during that period there would be no source of replacement torpedoes, and being a new design using an entirely new system it was likely it would take time to ramp production even once it began. If a war began during that period or the ramp up they could end up with a situation where they had no adequate supply of replacement torpedoes for months. It was thus decided that even though the peroxide torpedo was basically finished and clearly superior to not retool and continue and expand production of the existing design, better to have enough of an adequate design then far too few of a better one it was thought.

This was also decided upon under the working intelligence that Japanese torpedoes were largely similiar to other naval torpedoes which the Mk.14 and 15 where largely comparable too (the defect with the exploder tends to sometimes obscure the fact that kinetically and warhead wise the US torpedoes were broadly about as good as other nations weapons besides Japan). Interest in the higher performance peroxide torpedoes began to come back later on as the capability of Japanese torpedoes finally became more clear (because so many actions occurred at night where exact range was hard to judge or unseen ships or even submarines couldn't be ruled out or the fight was at close range to start it took quite a bit of time for enough instances to accumulate that the long range of the enemy weapon became evident). By that point expansion of capacity and new factories also made production of smaller runs of alternate torpedoes more viable, around 500 of the peroxide torpedoes were built in 1944-45, but by the time they might have been available late in that year there wasn't very much left for DD to torpedo.

With many DD actually starting to land tubes to add more AA guns in 1945 there just wasn't much pressing call for a high performance torpedo anymore and so these were never issued during the war, though they did replace the older models post-war in the much downsized fleet. At least until the heavy tubes were dispensed with entirely in the 50s.

US torpedoes also employed torpex/HBX, a more advanced underwater explosive, which gave them equivalent striking power in spite of smaller warheads. The Mark 15 and the Type 93 had basically the same striking power, even if the Type 93 had vastly better range and speed.

The hydrogen peroxide Mk 17 torpedo comes off pretty well in comparison. It had similar range, speed, and power to a Type 93 in a smaller, lighter, more easily maintained system. Hopefully if they implement USN destroyers they'll just skip to quintuple Mk 17 and spare me the trouble of scrapping Mk 15 launchers.

Probably some distinguished one with great service record, lead ship of the class and some very very unique one that have very bad/good luck. Also the Destroyer Escort would probably get into the game too.

By the time they get better torp the war was practically won and Japan was force to shift its focus away from torp and into aircraft since their fleet was slowly becoming immoblie

Willie D acquitted herself well in the anti-Kamikaze phase of the war! I believe she wound up shooting down about 12-14 planes. That is, quite frankly, more than most Fletchers, including Fletcher herself. Some of her lesser accidents might've gone unnoticed in other ships, given that wartime put a lot of inexperienced young men in the line of duty.

But you fire one torpedo at the President...

Well other than the Iowa incident there's also the shelling superior officer's party accident, and then there's the getting sunk by the plane that already has been shot down thing...

Not to mention that even before Iowa she did kind of screw up other ships because of her anchor while trying to get out of port...

Well, she managed to spray a neighboring destroyer with her AA fire during that period. So yeah, even then her luck sucked.

Regardless of torpedo usage, the Americans still did not operate Torpedo Cruisers during the war. Only a handful of American cruisers even had torpedoes during the war.

The old Omaha-class cruisers had 6 torpedo tubes.
The Atlanta-class AA cruisers had 8 torpedo tubes.
The Pensacola, and Northampton-class heavy cruisers originally had six torpedo tubes, but these were removed before the war started.

The other classes were not built with torpedoes at all.

Well other than the Iowa incident there's also the shelling superior officer's party accident, and then there's the getting sunk by the plane that already has been shot down thing...

Not to mention that even before Iowa she did kind of screw up other ships because of her anchor while trying to get out of port...

You forgot screwing up with the depth charge, which happened only shortly before the torepedo incident.

I did say something about that could have been available at the BEGINNING of the war you know...even if it in the end couldn't be much available due to Tk's explaination...

Most likely ones that have stellar service record. Or have extremely notable engagements. Or is Willie D.

Just saw the story of that ship and honestly... Wow..
