Seriously, what are you supposed to do, just back up until the car can pass and try again? There should at least be a space you can pull over to I would think.

That's what we do when there's a car coming towards us, on the narrow road to our garage. Ah, memories.
I remember reading an NTSB article on fatigue wherein an airline pilot was returning from the airport after a very long day and encountered a car stopped ahead of him. His instinctive action was to accelerate and pull back on the wheel, expecting his car to fly over the stopped one. It did not work. (Luckily, nobody was seriously injured)
