I forget about how high tech Japan's subways are. While they have automatic and simple swipes that take barely a second since the fucking 90s, here over at NYC we still have those century old pieces of shit turnstile and MTA's garbage trains that they refuse to do shit about but still somehow need to raise their fare price every year.

Never been to NY, but seriously how bad they are? I've heard some things about the metro but then I'd be like "nah, that can't be true. I mean it's one of the most famous city in the US."

I can sum it up in 3 words. Piece. Of. Shit.
Show
The subways are dirty and old as fuck, only recently have they've upgraded to electronic maps but even that it's shit and only on certain lines.
Every year they raise the price for bullshit reasons like not getting enough revenue so in few years time they'll jack up the price to maybe even 3 or 4 dollars per go.
The Subways are still dangerous as hell at night time and they're always doing budget cuts. It's no wonder that every few years there's some strike or uprising (Metro also controls the buses, not just the trains). Metro has a monopoly on transportation so we're at the mercy. Even if we complain, there's nothing we can do about for those of us that don't have a car.
It might be Famous but NYC is a pure tourist trap. Most people don't even know that all the food and transportation is much more expensive in NY. Not only that if you don't be careful you could be robbed in broad daylight by people "selling" records. Those sons of bitches surround you and ask you to "support" their Albums by showing them your wallet.
It'll be best to plan throughly and make sure you know where to go so you don't get lost and end up paying a crapload of money only on transportation. My warning is just this:
-Don't wander around without clear directions, because if you get lost you can end up wasting money on transportation via subway. If you do get lost, don't leave the subway. Going in and out can drain all of your money. Most of your money will go into transportation if anything.
-Don't fall for food vendors, some of them jack up their prices in some areas to the point of absurdity in the known tourist spots. I've been to the areas near the staten Islands near Ellis island where a small bag of peanut, the size of your palm, cost about 3$+ when it's usually only 1.25 in lower Manhattan.
-Don't make eye contacts with people handing out records or selling candy for their "schools" or someshit. Don't try to be nice to them because they will take advantage of you. They'll tell you their things are free and take one, only to surround you and threaten you to show them your money.
-and for the love of god, DO NOT TAKE THE TAXIS! These fuckers charge you by distance and time and they deliberately take the road with the most traffic, each minute and distance the fare raises. So even if you just sit in traffic for 30 minutes that fare price will still tick up. Those fuckers are vampires.
But, that's just all from my personal experience as I've lived there my whole damn life and I'm sure there's been much worse places. Don't let me damper your desire to visit NYC. Just that don't expect too much, thinking that just because it's famous that it'll be good. But I won't lie that there are some amazing sites to visit that makes NYC a beautiful place. Just don't look down on the ground, since the streets of NY is practically a sewage or hell, don't look up in the sky hoping to see sights because the air is mostly smog that covers everything and the nights in NYC is bright red.

Need to show growth. The only way to proof you are becoming someone "better" this year compared to the previous.

They're dicks. They raise the price but most of the time change little to almost nothing. In a few decades we're going to have to have sex just to get a ride back home. Hell, we might have to anyway once they decide they need to reduce the amount of transit officers again.
But, all my complaining I won't deny that there have been better changes in some parts. The fact they got rid of useless tracks for faster ones and upgraded some trains in the more used places is a plus. And like I mention, there really is nothing that someone like me who don't have other means of transportation can do about it except at least be able to complain. And I'm sure there are much worse places.
Tokyo's train station are overcrowded, you need to make sure to not lose your ticket, you have to pay more for certain areas and even change trains, buying another ticket. We can't have perfect places to live...
Damn, that's way worse than I thought. I've never got scared of public transportation so I thought it'd be all same, and that's mostly because of, you know, some fantasies about America. You lived there that long, then that's the truth. But also it's not surprising since it's true that no country could have their entire cities safe. I'm just surprised by how much the public transportation could go worse.

Pretty same here in Korea. It's crowded, you could lose your ticket, but you don't need to buy the ticket again for transferring to another line. And wow, I feel like I've been living too easy... I've always wanted to live outside of this country.
There's no real need to bother with tickets on Tokyo commuter rail; Pasmo/Suica are much more convenient and accepted on most everywhere (Tokyo Metro, Toei Subway, JR East lines, Yurikamome, etc.).
Wow. The only train system I've bothered to use had clean cars, no overcrowding... The only complaint was the bums stowing away and the asshole smokers on the platforms.
