The moonrunes themselves are just 'Gate/Door Guard' (monban) + informal declarative (mon). The joke is based on the repetition of the sound /mon/, plus it sounds a bit cheesy. A 'grate', if used as a noun, is a singular form of a 'grating', which is a lattice- or bar-work structure, usually used to in doorways/windows to block off areas. So, in order to make it both have the similar sound and also the cheesyness, I went with 'grate' - the homophone with 'great' provides a modicum of cheese. It's not the most wonderful interpretation, but I'm kinda new at this whole translation dealie.
But maybe they don't use the word 'grate' that way wherever you are? I'm not from the US, so I don't know the customary usage over there (If that's where you are).
