Okinawa's also got the Yui Rail, but for getting around, you pretty much use taxis or rentals. We took the Yui Rail to this side of Shuri Castle, by the way. We got a laugh out of a bank ad pasted on the doors that had a Brave series-type robot in it. :-)

I'm not sure how taxi fares are calculated in Japan, but here in America, there's a charge per fare plus mileage (or time, depending on traffic), so in places like New York City where taxis are a common method of transportation you can actually make more money by getting people to their destination faster so that you can pick up more passengers (assuming you don't have to go too far or wait too long for the next one).

My trip to China saw me pointing to the fare calculator before setting off quite a few times. But I can't really blame them; most of the drivers there were lucky enough to get a job so they didn't have to beg on the street any more.
