It could actually be leaning towards being much more tragic, seeing as one theory is that the only reason Kogasa even exists anymore is that she doesn't have a owner, so naturally if you give her a technical owner... well, she'd have no reason to exist.
A tsukumogami, such as Kogasa, doesn't rely on not having an owner. They arise from simple objects reaching one hundred years of age and becoming sentient. That also endows them with a life of their own, so they are independent. They may be in someone's attic at the time, technically owned, but that's practically irrelevant at that point, or any time after.

Oh, I knew that. I was just stating the theory as, it seems, some people didn't. Just so you know, the theory originated in the Japanese fandom, so it wasn't a case of western ignorance of eastern mythology meddling with things. If I'm remembering correctly, I think there was a doujin that went something to that effect where Kogasa basically went from being a common tsukumogami to being a grudge spirit, since she was a forgotten item. At the story's climax, Byakuren ended up taking her in and she [Kogasa] wound up fading away, having lost her reason to exist. After that one, I've seen the theme pop up a few times since, thus a theory.

On topic though, it seems the other theory (heatstroke) was correct.
