I had one once. It was weird. It almost turns to powdered cocoa in your mouth, which makes it hard to eat. More salty than sweet, and a hell of a taste of cocoa! So... it's not really chocolate.

No! That's the thing, it's Gourmet! You have a wide range of percentages of cocoa in Chocolate (Dark) from 75% (my favourite) to 99% (with a special mention to 82%). Normal milk chocolate's around 45% at best as well as cooking chocolate.

How bitter is 99% cacao? Is it really bitter enough to make someone spit it out?
99% is pretty bitter regardless of whatever else you put in it. If I recall correctly, it's mostly used for baking rather than eating, although some people claim to like it.

(I think they're just showing off :P)
It's like drinking coffee (espresso) without sugar. Sugar has a very strong sweet taste, so much that it covers a lot of other flavors. To really taste coffee it's best to drink it without sugar, but it's an acquired taste. The same for cocoa and chocolate, to really taste the cocoa beans it's best to reduce or not have any sugar present. I drink coffee (espresso) without sugar, but that 99% chocolate I had once… I couldn’t finish it. I had the same reaction Futo did… mentally, since I didn’t want to look weak in front of my younger brother… big brothers have to look cool no matter what. I had to drink a lot of water after. And dissolve the rest of the chocolate in hot milk with a bit of, yes, sugar… You should try it, the 99% chocolate at least once. By the way, the one I had was this one: http://calorielab.com/news/2005/12/04/lindt-debuts-super-chocolate-bar-99-cocoa/ read it, it’s funny, seeing I didn’t…
99% cacao chocolate is definitely an acquired taste and not for everyone. Its amazing to taste how much the cacao flavor is covered up by sugar and butter in "regular" chocolate though.

Indeed, as a Chocolate lover (back when I could still eat the stuff without having problems such as bowel irritation), 99% was nice, but not great, the very bitterness of the food item was very apparent, I ate it in little bits, even if those little bits were 1 row at a time. It really is an unusual item, but the packaging on that 99% was very well done that I honest to God didn't mind the fact I couldn't really eat that much of it!

99% is nothing like the other chocolates, I recommend milk or some water along with this, because it may leave some people with faces much like Futo's.
