Have you watched the show? In one of the episodes the Ideon slices a planet in half.

I haven't watched the show, but didn't it destroy the entire universe or something?

How powerful a super robot is doesn't matter so much as how awesome it is. And there's a lot of supers that are more awesome than Ideon by virtue of not being products of Tomino's emo period.

Yeah. But still... Ideon was a benchmark for many famous robot shows that followed. After all, without Ideon, there wouldn't be any Evangelion...

And Tomino was actually suffering of clinical depression, not being Emo.

Really? This guy inspired Evangelion by virtue of name/lore? Nice.

I was surprised to hear that Ideon was animated and produced, from what it sounds like, practically simultaneously alongside the latter half of Mobile Suit Gundam, and during all this, Tomino was facing depression?

Yep. The whole production part of anime business is a bitch. Anno Hideaki passed through exactly the same crisis while he was doing Nadia. That's why he came up with Evangelion as a means of relief. Eva was actually a parody of otaku tropes and themes... but, surprinsingly, it ended up being quite a hit...

I come back years later having seen Ideon, loved it, and thinking it much superior to Evangelion. It haunts me, but it's still hopeful, even in some of the most nihilistic scenes... until the 2nd movie. It really could have only ended the way it did happily, too. Even as the universe was engulfed in the Unlimited Power
