Potential ambiguity came up in Discord and pairing name seemed to be the preferred option to avoid any potential misunderstandings - while we have shipping (fandom) I think on a site where there's a bunch of boatgirls running around, "pairing name" will probably be clearer here.
The tag has never been removed and from a quick search with various watercraft-adjacent tags I don't see any real mistags not counting Kancolle where "ship name" carries a double meaning.
Someone who hasn't had their morning coffee yet theoretically being able to misinterpret the tag if they don't read the wiki is not a good argument to rename it. It's going from something literally everybody knows ("Shipping" is the term for this) to something that works, but is derived from terminology used in our slightly niche corner. This alias would have no merit but to resolve a made-up issue that hasn't shown itself in practice.

Yeah, I don't think it's a problem that currently exists, the thought was more to avoid any potential issues (especially with vehicle focus) just in case.
"Pairing" isn't niche terminology at all though, I'm really confused by the idea that it is. It's a common synonym in fandom spaces in general, I hear it all the time.
I personally think it's fine either way, but people in the Discord wanted me to propose it and if I had made the tag myself I would have called it pairing name, I think.

Seconding, they're synonymous and it's the word chosen for OTP (One True Pairing) aka the "ship" you enjoy most. I think it's understandable that someone who isn't into shipping would see "ship name" and be confused and "pairing" would be less ambiguous, but I guess if it isn't being misused then it isn't being misued.
I would've assumed it was for Kancolle too. I think any reasonable user that is not a proshipper would think the same.
Apparently "proshipper" and "proship" in modern terms often refer to "problematic" shiper/ships/shiping rather than just being supportive of shipping as a whole. I only learned this recently. "Problematic" being defined by the typical gen alpha twitter/tumblrite of course so things like incest, issues with a character's canonical age (classic), abusive dynamics, the ever-shifting goalposts of twitter's body type and art style of consent, social issues, etc etc etc. Anything you could find on one of those types' DNI lists basically.
Also as a boat enjoyer yeah, the first thing to come to mind would be actual (war)ship names. I'm not even sure what the tag for something like post #9125284 would be it would be if ship name was for pairings (and we wanted to tag such posts). Character name doesn't apply without a character tag.
Edit: The "pro" in proship doesn't come from the word problematic. Instead, modern groups of self proclaimed anti-shippers started hating "problematic" shipping as outlined above instead of being against shipping as a whole. They assigned the existing term proship to the "problematic" content they don't like and the people who support it rather than its prior meaning which aligned with the way it was used in this thread. This "false" "misconception" has since become a widely used meaning.
