What is it with the dairi stuff?

Posted under General

Not too much to say, this isn't really much of a complaint than a question but just wondering why there is so much Dairi stuff being submitted (and approved) basically inflating the entire touhou tag. Finding artwork without adding -dairi (which mind you takes up a tag slot from the *2* that free users get) or blacklisting the tag (which basically gives you entire blank-pages when scrolling) is much more tedious and also just seems pretty contradictory towards the whole point of the site which is being able to find images/ new artists/ high quality artwork

In another situation I would have dismissed it as "the site working as intended" but this has gone well beyond the point of being reasonable. No one's breaking any rules, but it's hard to describe this as anything other than two straight months of pollution.

I mean no, it is still the site working as intended. The observed behavior is just mildly annoying for some users. Calling uploading perfectly uploadable variant sets "pollution" isnt really right.

It's "mildly" annoying for all users. You can't even browse the front page without half or entire pages being lost to the Dairi tag. The touhou tag is borderline unusable. By all metrics short of the literal rules as stated, it is pollution and worsens the experience for everyone until it stops.

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should, just because it's not against the rules doesn’t mean there's no negative impact.

There's still the matter of what to do with the pool. In forum #363371, evazion disapproved of putting them all in the same pool. However, the pool page had the same issue of multiple Dairi pools popping up on the page. They've been putting them in a single pool since then for now, which I think is reasonable even if they do need to be split again later since it will cut down on spam in the pool page. Of course, this means we'll have about 10 pages of almost nothing but Dairi pools once they're split, but at least it will only need to be done once.

Yeah just been waiting on the best solution because a lot of the sets don't have names and/or are mixed between posts so it's kinda annoying. I personally would do by character but others have said by set which is what I've been struggling with.

I would vote for by character, because it side steps the issue of some sets only having a handful of images and arguments over whether those sets should even have pools, and doing by set would create like three times as many pools.

Even though it's an upload bounty and I'm sure there are users on the site who actually want these uploads, it still feels a bit mean? I'm not sure if that's the best word, but I think that this type of bounty makes the browsing experience of the Touhou tag very unfun for users of member level. If there is a silver lining, it might just be that this might incentivize users into working towards getting a promotion...

As said above the whole reason we're getting entire tags blotted out by nonstop Dairi slop in the first place is because it's an easy way to farm approved uploads for users who want a promotion. Even then, the guy uploading most of it is still not builder and he's been uploading thousands upon thousands of approved images for like two months now so I feel that's a bit demotivating for a user who wants to put in the work for extra tags.

It's not even a problem specific to Touhou, look at smaller post count general tags and it's the same thing of like 6 pages in a row of the same three images.

Personally I am of the opinion the great dairi spam of 2025 is exposing a critical truth: we must free the restricted users from this unjust 2 tag tyranny. Even as little as increasing it to 3 tags would ease the frustration of casual site users who are making accounts just to complain basic site navagability is being hampered by countless pages of spam that they don't have enough alloted tags to remove when searching for their favorite waifus.

I feel like it is important context to add said member has, in the past, been guilty of plenty bad behavior as documented in their negatives. Which I think has more to do with their lack of promotion than their upload count.

Not that I disagree with the opinion expressed here otherwise. I've expressed a few times in the past a desire to see that tag limit raised to three anyway. I'm just not sure how feasible it'd be.

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the variant spam isn't actually getting the non-contributor users any closer to being promoted, even if we disregard any spotty histories they may have.

Like, dumping thousands of nearly identical images solely because an Approver told you they would auto-approve every single one doesn't exactly say you have an eye for good art or that you're dedicated to improving the site. NNT handles the majority of promotions and he doesn’t just look at raw numbers when considering who's earned one.

Given the site owner has openly acknowledged recognizing this as being nothing more than an easy and lazy way for some users to inflate their numbers, it doesn’t necessarily paint the picture of someone "willing to put in the work" when they're taking the path of virtually no resistance to their goal.

Honestly I'm personally surprised that there is so little variant spam with how easy it is to find.

While not something that I'd call a "proper" method, posting variant sets, in general, is a good way to get more upload slots before being promoted to Contributor to upload more unique artworks.

Because with how inconsistent approvals can be, no matter the artwork quality, and how approvers prefer "disinterest" over literally anything else, I would not be surprised if some saw it as a choice between the spam and slowly uploading artworks with a small slot count, and praying that someone with higher privileges feels benevolent that day.
