Renaming Ugly_man to Ugly_bastard

Posted under Tags

If this tag is meant specifically for that trope, then the wiki needs a rewrite. The first paragraph only has a general description of ugly men. The trope isn't mentioned until the second paragraph, where it just mentions that they frequently appear in those kinds of works. Together, this makes it sound like a non-exclusive example of where an ugly man could be found without making it clear the tag refers specifically to those kinds of works.

As an aside, I believe ugly man's occasional use on photos is asking for trouble. We don't want to be accused of bullying random people by calling them ugly. Renaming the tag would help prevent it being used in that way, and if there is a photo in which the trope applies, renaming it to ugly bastard might soften the blow since it sounds more memey than ugly man.

Given the somewhat subjective nature of this tag, I somewhat desire to deprecate it entirely

What about "dirty_old_man"?

  • It is a common phrase in English
  • It is a fairly direct equivalent of one of the translated tags for ugly_man, 汚いおっさん (and is in fact exactly what Pixiv itself translates that tag as)
  • It should be easy to keep off photos posts because the word "dirty" is subjective... which isn't normally desirable in a tag name, but I think this concept resembles a meme tag and is inevitably going to be an "I know it when I see it" kind of thing

Not all ugly bastards may be old men but I think that's going to be an issue with any tag name, unless we come up with something that doesn't describe their appearance at all.

I would definitely not be in favor of deprecating the tag because, although subjective enough that it's hard to nail down a description for, this is an old and commonplace trope that usually makes itself fairly obvious when it's being referenced, and is something that certain people may be interested in searching for.

And what do you propose for its replacement? As per the wiki, its either for actual ugly people or the trope, and at the very least the latter should be searchable.

I always assumed this tag was for any ugly man in general and not just the trope, and as Blank User says, the wiki corroborates this. If you want to see the actual "ugly bastard" trope you can search ugly_man sex or ugly_man netorare. At most I think flipping the BUR so ugly bastard is the alias is fine, as that's what I searched when looking for this tag the first time

If the tag is meant to be for any ugly character in general it's a bad tag because then it's subjective, it'd be like having a cute_girl tag. A vast majority of the search results are porn it feels like the intended tag usage is self--evident.

I went through the tag and removed a handful of posts that were either subjective/irrelevant (post #5586511, do we need all of one piece in the ugly man tag? I'm sure our resident bara cabal would disagree that they're THAT ugly) or weird stuff like Quasimodo (post #9030173).

If this tag is for the trope then ugly bastard imo is the right name. This tag is not for any uglier than normal/unattractive man, it's specifically (and de-facto) for the hideous fat smelly greasy otaku/old man/businessman that looks like it's going to rape your waifu. Even if you look at ugly_man is:sfw all of the results fall under that, even when you can barely see the character (post #9018310) or it's just an implication (post #8919036, post #7713397, post #325728). Also, any of our users would be immediately familiar with what "ugly bastard" is for, while ugly man is fairly subjective and prone to people dumping stuff like long nose in it.
