What even are these tags? What is a hanfu? These tags suggest that hanfu is a single piece of clothing, whereas the hanfu wiki suggests that it's for all sorts of traditional Chinese clothes, including things like hats and accessories.

The tags can be confusing. Maybe think of it this way: the wiki defines hanfu as the entire traditional system of clothing. However, in practice, tags like white hanfu are often used to describe the main robe in the image, not the entire ensemble.

So, the general tag covers the broad tradition, while specific color tags typically refer to that central garment. It's a shorthand in tagging, not a full definition.

What I'm getting at is that a tag like black hanfu is like having a tag called black wafuku that sounds like it's for Japanese clothing in general but it's really for black kimonos.

Perhaps the core issue is that English lacks generic terms for specific Chinese clothes like kimono or hakama. Thus, with precise names like zhijupao being too obscure, the word hanfu must pull double duty for both the system and the clothes, making color tags a practical necessity to fill this lexical gap.
