Small Question About Uploading an Image

Posted under General

So basically, in this source here, the vast majority of images are normal. However, one of them has a lot of random images unsuitable for Danbooru...to hide an actual image I believe we would want. As I'd rate this image "Q" for "mild sexual contact", I believe it was done in order to not trip the censors on Weibo.

However, I'm not sure if the artist, shiwei kun, is active anywhere else without this clutter above it. So what exactly should be done in this situation?

the artist you've linked is a duplicate of sisio_kun. Their pixiv account is linked, the image you're referring to is there if you want to upload it. I already uploaded myself a few months ago, you just can't see it because it's banned. Unfortunately, they're a banned artist.

I'll alias the artists and ban the posts.

the Pixiv wasn't linked originally, I only found the connection by reverse image searching one of their weibo images. Which is a good way to find alternate accounts for an artist if you suspect they have other accounts that haven't been linked to.

This would be one of the extremely rare situations where editing an image is permitted. I've done it myself, but it's only for very exceptional circumstances, and I personally sought admin approval before doing it. The bad part of the image has to be very bad.

hdk5 clearly said to do it losslessly.

I did it in post #7183895

Not everyone is fully aware of what that involved, and the artifacts in post #7178115 are indistinguishable from the original ones. It's fine to upload a better version, but no need to go flagging other posts over it, just like with normal duplicates/1ups.

Oh I see. Instead of making a new post and flagging should I have asked for the image to be replaced (topic #16765)? Or should I just have left it as a child?

Replacement would've been optimal, given it's the same source it should be fine, or just upload it as a parent and leave both up. As per howto:flag, duplicates shouldn't be flagged.

It's a third-party edit, they aren't given the same considerations for flagging. I don't see the difference though.

This kind of cropping is valid, unlike, for example, hard-translated comics. These are different kinds of third-party edits and should probably be treated differently.

I don't think it's really relevant given third-party sourced dupes also get deleted, even if they're completely unchanged. That's just the risk you take if you do things like this.

As an aside, last time I saw an admin asked about this type of cropping, they said to just upload the original. Given nobody actually posts policy on the site anymore it's hard to tell whether that's the current stance or if the whims of the admins have changed over Discord, but that was my experience.

This is not a third-party source, it's a third-party edit of the original source. Cropping out eggregious/bad memes that are part of the image has generally been considered fine, and in this case the parent post should act like a relatively normal 1up.
