BUR #8703 has been rejected.
create alias film_grain -> noise
as far as i can see both these tags are used the same way.
ideally film_grain would be reserved for the specific pattern of grain from analogue film ( e.g. https://i.imgur.com/b754LZh.jpg ) rather than a uniform texture, but i can't find any examples like this.
if the alias gets approved i'll sort out the two wiki pages as well
I really don't see what's wrong with continuing to use film_grain. It's the better-established tag by a long shot; we've been using it for over a decade. As for the idea that it should be reserved for a particular grain pattern, that just strikes me as incredibly pedantic. I can't recall a single time when someone took issue with a post being tagged film_grain because the pixel variation was too uniform.
Noise, on the other hand, was only populated within the last year, and over half the posts with that tag were tagged by a single individual who was apparently unaware of the older tag. It has ambiguity issues with artists and copyrights formerly tagged noise, and there's the potential for it to be misused for audio noise in videos with sound.
If anything, this alias should be reversed.
i'm not entirely opposed to the reverse alias but it would require some manual sorting of the noise posts -- for example, i don't think post #4337411 would qualify for film_grain

Yes, but the person who wrote the wiki for noise meant that tag to be for both.
I would like to manually sort the tag into static and film grain. Not sure if it should be aliased to either or left empty as a disambiguation page.

if we go down that path, disambiguation page sounds best to me
