Florist wanted!

Posted under Tags

The flower request tag is currently over 1K. Many of the posts could easily be tagged by someone with even amateur level knowledge about flora. Unfortunately that someone isnt me. If this someone lacks the desire to look at a thousand anime girls with flowers, then could he give me a crash course in common Japanese flowers?

I suck at identifying flowers but this flower language dictionary with pictures is what I'd use. It is missing some 'common' Japanese flowers (that aren't used much for flower language symbology) though, like the higanbana.

The website is in Japanese, so you'd have to google the katakana name to find out what it's called in English, sadly. Or maybe pass the whole website through an MTL, if that approach works.

I made a dedication many months ago to help another user clean up flower_request but unfortunately I got lazy, however if you come across flowers you don't know, it's simple enough to look up "blue flower" etc on your search engine of choice, and there are sites with handy charts of flowers for a specific color. That worked for me when tagging flowers that I was at least 90% positive was correct, though someone with actual botanical experience would be better suited for gardening this request tag.

Each flower identified in flower_request will need to have their flower color(s) tagged too, such as white_flower and so on. Ideally, the flower wiki would be the go-to for flower tagging, but many of the flowers don't have wikis, and this is less efficient than googling the color of the flower and combing through whatever you can find there. So this means a possible restructuring of the aforementioned wiki to make it easier to navigate for this purpose, as well as populating the flower wikis that don't have wikis yet with a brief description of the flower.

Ideally there should be a subsection of tag group:flowers (or maybe a separate wiki linked to tag group:flowers) containing a bunch of hierarchical field-guide style identification keys for identifying the flowers. This should be written by someone with both botanical experience and familiarity with how the various flowers are drawn in anime-style art.

The identification keys should probably use some of the following:

  • Plant type (tree, shrub or grass?)
  • Flower shape (star, cup, bell, pitcher, cross, etc.)
  • Petal arrangement (radial, curled, 'rose'-style semi-doubled, fully doubled, "pom-pom" dome)
  • Number of petals (if can be easily discerned, i.e. not too many or arranged in overlapping patterns)
  • Inflorescence pattern (single stalk, cluster, flower "head", umbel, stalk, etc.)
  • Flower hanging style (erect up, erect sideways, semi-drooping, fully drooping)
  • Flower color patterns (solid color, bicolored, mostly solid but edge is differently colored, alternating radial stripes)
  • Possible flower colors
  • Other prominent misc. features like the hibiscus' massive pistil (i.e. that central stalk thingy)
  • Other parts of the plant if still unclear (leaf type and patterns, etc.)

And link to photos or example posts for the final entry at the end of the hierarchical identification tree.

We don't need too many keys; just enough to sort and identify the ones we have as tags. And some of the ID keys are probably not as useful as they are in real life for certain flowers if they aren't consistently (or clearly) drawn with said features in anime-style art. But the above list provides a good place to start thinking of which features to identify.

Edit: Found this website that mentions some of the points above, but with photo examples and phrased using proper botanical terms.

Edit2: The individual flower wikis should probably also cover some of the points above. At least the more salient ones important for ID-ing the flower.

Edit3: A sample branch for identifying hibiscus would probably look like this:

  • Shrub?
    • Trumpet shape flowers?
      • Five petals?
        • Large, prominent pistil (read: giant central stalk)?
