Just putting this out here, after a bit of discussion on the Discord, it was decided to create About:Danbooru. blame @Damian0358 for giving me the green-light It's purpose is to collect any event of note that happened in Danbooru's history, including closely-connected/noticeable boorus. I've only been particularly active in the forums for little more than a year, so it would be nice if other more veteran users could help in this project.
CmdrWelkinGunther: Is there a Wiki on gel, or forum post? I know what it is but I don't really know the whole history of gel vs dan nonamethanks: a long time ago danbooru got a sudden influx of visitors and for one reason or the other albert clenched his asscheeks and the site went down. gelbooru was created as a replacement nonamethanks: then danbooru came back up with accounts (it used to be anons could upload and comment) nonamethanks: gelbooru's name comes from the main developer's nick (geltas) + booru Damian0358: Why isn't there a Danbooru lore page? Guaro1238: create one nonamethanks: ^ Damian0358: No, you. CmdrWelkinGunther: I have also wondered why there is not a lore page Damian0358: Besides, we have a lore page already. Damian0358: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/sites/danbooru e?: for some reason there are a few pages like this e?: https://discord.fandom.com/wiki/Server:Danbooru_Discord Damian0358: Anyway, legit though, if anyone were to make a lore page, it would not be me, because I basically stay out of all drama and have to rely on what you guys share to even know what's up. nonamethanks: i am too lazy to write something like that nonamethanks: i dont have the attention span nonamethanks: i prefer to shitpost in the middle of drama rather than document it bipface: i've been thinking it would be cool to draw up a taxonomy of the major boorus bipface: maybe like a family-tree bipface: showing the descendants of various versions of gelbooru and danbooru, etc. Username Hidden: i honestly would like to see a "history of danbooru" Username Hidden: or rather Username Hidden: a list of dates where important events happened Username Hidden: i would make it Username Hidden: if i didn't join only a couple years ago Damian0358: Do it anyway.
Though I've managed to contribute a good bit to the wiki already, there's still a lot missing, both in terms of on-site achievements and crucial events within the site's community. There's also the matter of deciding what to do with the usage of archived links, given the potential for unnecessary traffic strain.
So any help is appreciated when it comes to fleshing it out further! Even if you aren't sure you can contribute to the page directly, just sharing knowledge in this thread suffices, as it can be sorted out and shuffled in.
May as well bump this thread to discuss some of the deficiencies the about:danbooru wiki has faced since its creation.
There are two main elements which are poorly represented so far, in my eyes: the transition from early Danbooru to modern Danbooru, and the modern Danbooru period as a whole.
The former centers the fact that we don't have exact dates for after Danbooru gets publicly taken down, in specific when Danbooru went live once more. We do have some details on that in-between period; Shinjidude talked about the time he was promoted to Janitor back in March on the Discord server, and shared a screenshot of the email he received when the site went private. Following up on it, Shinji confirmed he received it on March 3rd 2007 at 5:31 PM, so a gap between when albert announced Danbooru's shutdown and Shinji getting the email, basically revealing that on Miezaru there were less than 100 regular users at the time. Presumably as a result of this trac, Danbooru's post versions pre-March 14th 2007 were flattened into anonymous (though forum #7656 indicates a broader lost of user data). forum #3261 indicates that there was, essentially, an unbroken chain of activity on Donmai.us via Miezaru, but that further begs the question of when the hell Danbooru proper returned, and so far searching both albert's old blog and the forum has yielded no answers to this question.
There's also the two adjacent issues: 1) figuring out when exactly anonymous posts (and posts that were labeled anonymous after the user data loss) were assigned to albert, both because categorizing this info would be useful, but also to get closer to the question of what albert's actual post count actually is, at least relatively since we likely won't ever know the true answer; related, when anons lost uploading rights. 2) figuring out when yukkuri abuse was banned, since that would allow us to figure out when One Yukkuri Place was established, allowing us to add it to the list as well; it is commonly stated that "Shii" created OYP after they uploaded yukkuri abuse on Danbooru and got kicked from the site as a result of it; the earliest mention of the website on Danbooru seems to be comment #192493, and mentions of OYP in the forum, comments, and even user feedback all indicate the unacceptability of yukkuri abuse, but I can't seem to find any user that resembles "Shii" or any specific incident that led to his banishing and the creation of OYP.
The latter meanwhile centers a broader issue, and that's the fact that, with its creation in 2021, about:danbooru's documentation has been ended up very hourglass-heavy: lots on 2005 to 2007, and on 2017 to today, but not much between 2007 and 2017. It would be awesome if veterans from that period could step forth to fill in more details from that time period.
Damian realized you can search for how many posts have albert as the updater on version 1 (i.e., the uploader, instead of anonymous / null). He came up with 46,869 posts.
I wrote a script to get all these posts and add them to favorite groups and got the same number of posts:
There's a lot you can do with these alone, but I was thinking these could be in a special collection pool or a new meta tag. Damian suggested the reverse: creating a meta tag called "anonymous upload" for all albert posts that aren't in these favorite groups. That's not a bad idea either; you could search user:albert -anonymous_upload to find albert's uploads. What do you think?
The fact that the last post here is post #756105 is wild. Almost all nine of these favgroups are from 2005 to 2007, but the last one goes up to 2010. I can literally see who actually uploaded it in the post versions, it isn't just labeled as 'Anonymous'...
Includes all posts where the first uploader is "anonymous" (null).
Already added the 51 posts from favgroup #49990 and favgroup #49992 (all MD Anonymous uploads) and the 33 posts from favgroup:49988 id:>=506892 status:any (posts where "uploader: albert" but version 1 is actually someone else; i.e. the post was reattributed to albert.
There's no solution there (other than it being added by the Danbooru source code); someone proposed deprecation to prevent people from adding it, but that would prevent people from adding it back if someone removes it. I think it should just be like any other tag new posts don't get, like imageboard desourced.
Ideally, the posts' uploader information should be fixed/reassigned based on the info described in the wiki, but that's beyond what a BUR can do.
Nuked the tag and moved the essential information from the deleted wiki into five new entries in about:danbooru (2005-12-01, 2007-03-14, 2007-06-15, 2009-08-20, and 2010-09-29, as well as "See also"), along with searches that use the favorite groups instead of the tag.
