alias eyes -> eye_focus

BUR #4422 has been rejected.

create alias eyes -> eye_focus

Controversial topic of the month, and part of the efforts started in topic #14889.

"Eyes" is a padding tag and it has no real meaning in how it's currently being used.
The wiki says "For use when there is a peculiar abundance of eyes, eyes in unusual places, or a general focus on eyes in an image.". However:

  • we already have various tags for all these different concepts. extra eyes, third_eye, pool #2032 (beautiful eyes) for well drawn eyes, etc.
    • we do not have a tag for eyes in the wrong position, but the answer to this is creating a tag for them, not lumping it all together with the rest to the point where it's not searchable anyway.
  • we're at the point where posts like post #4218992 or post #4247400 are routinely tagged with it, because people never read wikis, so it really makes no sense to keep it around in its current status. There's also the issue of other boorus polluting our usage since they have no tag quality control.

I propose turning it into an eye_focus tag, for posts where eyes are prominent or are the focus of the picture, and leaving other cases for the appropriate tags or pools.

Some examples of different picture subjects with a focus on eyes that I think are the best cases for such a tag:
post #4200783
post #4196407
post #4241896
post #4243691
post #4155323
post #4136339

Some examples of posts I think do not belong to it, and are basically a substitute for other tags like ringed eyes or bright pupils or just padding:
post #4193731
post #4153953
post #4154673
post #4245400
post #4172567

If the intention is to have the tag not be cluttered with post tagged by users who routinely tag eyes on everything, I suggest a rename instead of an alias. That way, all incorrect uses of eyes can be cleaned easily. eyes is also often left over when someone forget the underscore in <color>_eyes and then only removes the unused and unaliased <color> tag.

Can't request renames in a single step for tags having more than 200 posts, so it'll have to be done afterwards. Or we could wait and see and remove the alias if it keeps getting used as padding. Either way is fine for me.

The only way this tag is going to get cleaned up is if someone cleans it up. So far I haven't seen any efforts to clean it up. Renaming it without cleaning it up is just throwing the garbage in a different pile.

I'm cynical about name changes like this because we've gone through this before with text focus and hip focus and I don't think it helped any. If you look at text focus and subtract out text only pages, you can see it's mostly just random comics that don't have any more text than normal. If people can't get text focus right, which should be the easiest one of these tags to get right, then I have little faith they'll get other tags right.

The thing is that if you want to tag something text, but the only tag available to you is called text focus, and you see everyone else using it for random garbage, then that's the tag you'll use. To a certain extent it doesn't matter what the tag is called, you use what's available to you.

If the eyes tag actually gets cleaned up to the point where it fits what eye focus is supposed to be, then I'd be more willing to do this. Otherwise there's no point, people are just going to look at it and go "well, the tag is called eye focus, but everyone else is just using it for whatever, so it's fine for me to use it for whatever too".

Looking at the tag history, it's only gained about 700 posts in the last year. If someone is serious about gardening this tag, then a couple new posts per day shouldn't be hard to keep up with, even if we didn't rename it.

@evazion I was going to clean it up if it was aliased. No much point in doing it if the name stays like this.

I guess this is sort of a catch-22 situation. I'll create eye focus and populate it, and then ask for a nuke of eyes, because it's easier to add tags to hundreds of posts than nuke it from thousands if I have to go through each one anyway.
