Some turntables aren't actual phonographs. Turntable controllers with rotating plates that apply an emulation of vinyl scratching to digital audio tracks are quite common (e.g. this one here). This seems to be the kind of device that is depicted in post #4017825, post #4223006 and post #4034659, for example.

It'd probably make more sense to label those with a new tag, like turntable_controller or dj_controller as opposed to having them share the turntable tag.

You're right until you mentioned disc jockeys. Turntables are really distinctive and are not phonographs but DJ turntables are completely different ordeal and they're often really visually different than your casual Audio Technica turntable that you can buy at an audio store. The turntables you've shown in those posts are wildly different from something akin to post #3359971 . DJ boards need different tagging.

A separate tag for turntable controllers is a valid option, but I think the proposed deimplication will simplify searches and produce less mistagging. It seems likely that many uploaders will apply turntable to any DJ equipment that includes some kind of round plate, without stopping to check whether there's a tonearm. If the implication is removed, then taggers who are aware of the distinction can still tag actual DJ record players as both turntable and phonograph. Wiktionary defines turntable as simply "a circular rotating platform", the ones on record players are mentioned as a special case.

I don't really have an opinion on whether the record players used by DJs should be called phonographs, but if other people also find that misleading, then it might be useful to create a more general record_player tag, and let phonograph imply that.

To be fair though, turntable is ambiguous and can mean a variety of things.
