[REJECTED] Tag alias: round_teeth -> upper_teeth

Posted under Tags

create alias round_teeth -> upper_teeth

Link to alias

Seems to be used for the same thing.

While this alias would make more sense the other way around at first glance (round teeth has a wiki and is tagged on much more posts) I think way is better since not all upper teeth is round while all round teeth is "upper". I can accept an implication from round teeth to upper teeth instead if that's desired but I really think we should do an alias.

It shouldn't be the same thing - round teeth is for a specific relatively low detail way of drawing teeth, which can be either the upper teeth, lower teeth or even both. The vast majority are upper teeth just because expressions that expose the upper teeth in a way that would be represented by this are much more common than ones that would expose the lower ones, but there's nothing inherently to say that the lower teeth can't be visible and I know that examples exist (even though quickly skimming a few dozen images didn't bring up anything that have them and which aren't questionable whether they actually want the tag).

On the other hand the instinctive assumption for an "upper teeth" tag would be meaning "upper teeth visible (and drawn in any way) but lower teeth not", including things like post #3123000 which is basically the opposite of round teeth.

Well the round_teeth wiki only says: "A common depiction of a wide, open-mouthed smile where the front upper teeth are drawn as a single round semicircle." and nothing about lower teeth so I thought it only applied to that, if the tag can be used for lower round teeth too then this alias is wrong.

Example of a picture in which lower teeth are visible (although the tag is being used to describe the upper ones): post #2959564

The "wide open-mouthed smile" bit of the wiki is even more obviously wrong - eg. post #2711650 (NSFW) is a textbook example (and again the lower teeth are visible) but is most definitely not a smile.

post #2286270 is what I would consider an example of both round upper and round lower teeth - and again definitely isn't a smile.

I'm not sure round_teeth should include all cases where teeth are drawn like that (e.g. post #3108463) or only those where it's used to express "youthfulness, playful personality, and innocence" (e.g. post #1703270). It depends on how people want to use the tag. Personally, I'm quite happy with the current definition.

In any case, round teeth are absolutely not the same thing as upper_teeth in general. If anything, that latter tag is dubious. It could be either a more vaguely named subset of round_teeth, or too general to be useful. Are we supposed to use it on any picture where (only) the upper teeth are visible at all? That would just be more of the low-value tagging for tag count that has gotten popular lately, in my slightly grumpy opinion.
