Link to request

So many redundant tags that serve virtually no purpose out of one or two characters. Have seen much discussion on this topic with no overall resolution for it so far, so I figured it's not unfair to attempt a request.

I may have missed a few or included some that could be argued against removal, apologies if so. I'm not too familiar with these bulk updates so if any of these should simply be "update" I'll try to quickly resolve that.

EDIT: This bulk update request has been rejected because it was not approved within 60 days.

EDIT: The bulk update request #1167 (forum #130353) has been rejected by @DanbooruBot.

Aliases? Why not mass updates instead?

Aliases are kind of expensive for these kinds of things, it'd look a little ridiculous and hard to undo.

Errr, yeah, sorry about that. Do I change them to "create update" or just "update"?

Not sure what you're asking, but when you edit your BUR, just replace all of the 'alias' commands with 'update'.

This post won't update them either, so you might have to edit it to indicate that. I don't think the aliases are necessary since I *hope* people will know not to use them after they've been cleared out.

Aliases, in my opinion, are really for only equivalent things. That is, either they refer to the exact same thing or the two are so indistinguishably similar or confused over that one is picked over the other (such as stockings -> thighhighs).

Updated

Fixed, hopefully is it now how it should be - edited the request as well.

Just update. On the other hand, you could have just asked a Builder to do the updating for you.

Yeah, my bad. I'm not too familiar with the update/request system, couldn't seem to find a good help topic outside of the one for aliases. Will keep that in mind for the future.

Before it is done, they need to be checked to see if there are any non-Kemono Friends posts that need to be salvaged (any of those will be rendered unsearchable if edited only to base animal ears/tail tag).

Will do a quick run through the ones that do have non-Kemono Friends posts in that case:

  • Serval print has one Idolm@ster post and serval tail has one more original post.
  • Tapir ears and tail do have a number of non-Kemono Friends posts, but they are exclusively of Doremy Sweet.
  • Anteater ears and tail has one original post.
  • Raccoon ears has quite a few.
  • Jaguar ears has one Fate post. Jaguar print has two non-original posts.
  • Cheetah tail with one Idolm@ster post?.
  • Kangaroo ears and tail both have a good number, two of which are original.
  • Red panda ears and tail both have the same posts, none of which are original.
  • Alpaca ears has 18 of an original character Alpaca-san. Tail only has two, both still this character.
  • Zebra ears has two and tail has three
  • Panda ears has a good chunk despite being very similar to bear ears.

...and that's about it, hope I didn't miss any. All the rest are exclusive to Kemono Friends thus far. I'll go ahead and remove raccoon_ears from the request. Should the rest of these all be kept?

Updated

I would prefer to keep at least the kangaroo, alpaca, zebra, and panda tags. Panda and alpaca are decently popular in Japanese media, enough to where variants like stuffed_*, *_costume, and *_hair_ornament are populated to varying degrees. Kangaroo and zebra are distinct enough, and quite possible to see continued use outside Kemono Friends.

I wouldn't want to throw out things like post #2681654 and post #1177796 from search possibilities. You think for "rarer" animals, it might be OK to at least leave such posts with the base animal tag (serval, anteater)?

Can agree on alpaca and panda. Will remove them from the request.

I think reducing them to their base animal is fair (perhaps even for zebra and kangaroo). I imagine anyone actually searching those creature tags wouldn't fuss over those being in the results, and gives an identifiable way to search for them without creating "exclusive" tags. Not quite sure how I'd adjust the request for that though however, as it would involve multiple tag changes (ie serval_print -> animal_print, serval). Will leave them there for now.

EDIT: Updated the request to remove alpaca and panda, but I left kangaroo and zebra to await thoughts on the above. They certainly seem utilized but maybe still rare enough to justify just the base animal.

Wouldn't that mean that someone searching for the actual animal would find pictures of animal girls instead? Granted, it'd probably be quite rare for someone to look up pictures of actual servals on Danbooru, but.

Tagging the base animals would be rather inconsistent. We don’t tag the animals for any other animal ears/tails either. For example, even if a character has cat_ears, there must be an actual cat present to add the cat tag.

Also, I have used the serval tag to find images of actual servals along with serval_(kemono_friends. Tagging every serval_(kemono_friends) post with serval would make it impossible to find such images with a tag search.

Currently, most of those specific animal ears/tails tags are exclusive to the Kemono Friends characters. For example, serval_ears -serval_(kemono_friends) status:any yielded six posts just now: two didn’t have serval_(kemono_friends) tagged even though she was present, one had serval_ears tagged even though none were present, and three had what I expected. But what I was actually trying to say is that searching for serval_ears is pretty much equivalent to searching for serval_(kemono_friends) at the moment, while serval would not be.

Making posts like the three I just mentioned searchable can only be achieved by not going ahead with this BUR.

Consistency isn't everything. There are 24003 cat posts. There are 32 serval posts. Separate tags for animals and humanoids with animal characteristics are more useful in the former case.

If being able to search for posts of KF characters accompanied by actual animals is deemed important, then there's still the option of gathering the rarer animal personifications under ANIMAL_girl/boy. Then you could still search for ANIMAL ANIMAL_girl, without littering the site with contrived tags like aardwolf_tail.

I definitely was not suggesting doing that. My suggestion was for non-Kemono Friends posts and only examples where the kind of animal ears and tail are particularly rare. I favor search convenience over consistency. And we've done such things as other copyrights become particularly popular before, like with limiting the use of personification on Kantai Collection posts.

Though posts like post #2673283 and post #2634737 present a different quandry. They're related to Kemono Friends, but were considered not to be cosplay, as it's just the ears (should they be considered cosplay?). Getting rid of the tags will make those kind of "serval ears" posts difficult to search as well.

One thing I should note is that no specific animal is actually implicated to animal at this point. So assuming it all gets correctly tagged, you could narrow the search down using serval animal.

I've removed the contentious tags from the request.

That said, I hope some resolution can be made for the more obscure tags indeed. It is nice that some of these original posts have a way that doesn't hide them amidst a sea of other posts, but also consider, is anyone actually searching something like anteater_ears in the first place? To me it feels like these posts get the most visibility from popping up on the first page of uploads as well as anyone who follows the artist as opposed to incredibly uncommon animal features. (That aside, I do understand it's likely more about the potential as opposed to the actual usage.)

I agree with EB on this. It feels like there has to be a better way than just leaving these tags that will likely never see widespread use, even from a visibility standpoint, like an "uncommon_animal_ears" tag or something along those lines, though I'm obviously no tagging savant.

Regardless, hopefully there can be an agreement on the tags left in. These at the very least should help clean things up a bit.
