I`ve noticed this kind of thing with letterboxing instead of a border.

outside_of_border is an existing tag.

Since we're talking about the boundary of the subject or background fading, and not the entire subject/background, how about fading_subject_boundary and fading_background_boundary?

I think the point of outside_of_border is that only one part of the subject sticks out in some attempt to break the fourth wall.
The point with my suggestion is different from this in/out effect, as the subject is simply drawn entirely over the background. It's the background looking restricted rather than the character.

I forgot we had that tag already though so my definition was ambiguous.
