A question about "Booru"s

Posted under General

I've heard about other anime image-based sites such as 4chan, Gelbooru (very similar name), and Konachan.com. The last 2 have extremely similar site designs and layouts as Danbooru, and I want to know which site is the original?

Gelbooru seems like a tasteless variant of Danbooru, and Konachan seems like a "highres only" variant, but it has slightly more sophisticated user profiles, I noticed they have the privilege of user avatars.

And does anybody know if Danbooru will be implementing user avatars in the near future?

Signs point to "no".

Hmm, I read your post on the thread you linked to on "point"
After looking at Gelbooru's forums, I can see why there's a strict "Site discussion and feedback only" forum here.

But I also feel Gelbooru is a more tasteless site than Danbooru, they let just about any image through, and anons post. I like how Danbooru mods try to delete spam threads and spoilers in images, and I think alot of the long-time users here have been disciplined.

But what's the harm in adding a few little features to the Danbooru membership?

Cruft that doesn't fit with the intended purpose of the forum is bad by default. Setting aside the fact that it would give new users the wrong impression, it's just not necessary.

I forget offhand what it is but there is a saying for the danbooru forums but I will paraphrase.

- You can't make jokes
- You can't post off topic
- You can't use emoticons/leetspeak/etc.
- You can't have (or have anything) fun

It's admittedly a little hard to get used to, but Danbooru goes with the clean/professional feel over everything else.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed at first, because this site is the reason I've watched some great anime and heard great music, but there's no great place for me to discuss that stuff, 4chan and most anime boards suck, this site has a great community. But there's still fun commenters on the pictures, and that's enough for me.

Or in other words: Danbooru is serious business.

That's the 3rd time I've seen that post in it's exact quote.

I think danbooru came first, then because of server stability issues gelbooru was created as some sort of backup site.

Yes, of the *booru's, Albert is the author of Danbooru's engine, and Danbooru is the original site. The others either use Danbooru's engine, or another (e.g. Gelbooru or Shimmie) that is designed to emulate Danbooru's functionality as well as oftentimes its look and feel.

Well, I'm glad I became a member of this site before seeing the others. Although I'm curious as to why Albert wants this to be a strictly business type of site.

Basically, Danbooru is a site for collecting high quality anime/manga related art. That's it. The reason we're members here is because we enjoy the art. We're not here for jokes and other shit that clutter forums. We only interact with eachother long enough to make this site a better place, then go our separate ways. Danbooru's "forum" is only for dicussing problems/solutions dealing with the site.

Now if someone wanted to make a separate site/forum for all the banter...
