Signifiance of inviting people to privileged and contributor status

When someone is given one of these, what becomes of their account capabilities? Are people who are added automatically given such status?

You can invite people to become priv/cont if you have invite slots. They will have the stated ability right away.

Only an admin can edit a user to priv/contrib, I highly doubt any janitors have invites left from 2+ years ago.

For me it came right away and I didn't find out until I went to my profile and saw I was listed as privileged.

Yes, invites have not been issued since late 07 and if you weren't a janitor when they were changed to janitor only they were purged afaik, even if they weren't purged users were only issued 2 or 3 each.

It seems kind of deceptive to tell people "work hard, be active in the community, and maybe you'll receive an invite!" when in reality, only two people have that power and they rarely use it.

Considering any janitor can dmail jxh or albert and ask for a user's promotion (I've done it 5 times if not more) it's not deceptive at all.

Not two. All mods can invite people too, and the last time I did it was yesterday.

Oh I forgot albert issued like a hundred invites to all the mods when he cut the invite ability down to janitors and above. Admins can edit to any user level, though.

No, we don't have limited invites. I can invite anybody to the Privileged or Contributor level, provided they have no negative records.

Speaking of technicalities, why exactly was the invites screen stripped of the list of users you've invited? It was useful.

I haven't tried in forever, so I don't know if I have any invites left or not. I wouldn't be surprised if were just wiped for Janitors that still had any. It used to list the number of invites you had (way back when) and it hasn't since the invite policy changed.

I'm almost certain it was done the same time that number of comments, approvals, favorites, forum posts etc got changed to textual links instead of counts in the user profiles, back when they were continuously timing out.

Anelaid was a feb 2010 registration so you probably have some if you were a wave 1 janitor, I know I still had one left but it's been wiped as I tried to invite moonspeaker and someone before that.

Not only janitors. I dmailed jxh last month with a set of 41 users and he promoted 30 of them. So don't hold back because of your rank.

I have never thought about recommend directly through dmail before and just give out positive record. It's good to know.

I'm sure I had invites left from way back, but it's been "Access denied" for years. Would be nice to be able to see previously invited users again though - I know EB was one (jxh2154 narrowly beat me to inviting Fencedude), but I can't remember who the other ones were.

The list is not there anymore. I can invite people, but I can't see whom I've invited previously, which I complained about a few comments up.
