twitter downsampling images to 2048

howto:twitter says

Image quality

Since December 11th, 2019, Twitter won't compress or downscale images unless the image is bigger than 4096x4096, more than 5MB large, or it has exif rotation or very inefficient compression ([1], [2]).

This means that Twitter uploads usually have the same quality as Pixiv uploads.

Images posted before December 11th, 2019 were always compressed or downscaled (except for PNG with alpha channel), so Twitter images from this time period were generally lower quality than Pixiv images.

however it seems that uploading a twitter url only gets you an image up to 2048 pixels horizontal/vertical, which means it's downsampling images, which means you should upload the images from a twitter log posted on pixiv that has the original resolution instead of posting from twitter when possible.

twitter (2048x1452)
pixiv (3496x2480)

can someone confirm this and if possible someone higher ranked than me amend the wiki? thanks

It's probably the artist compressing them, not Twitter. There are still images that were posted on Twitter after your example (10:42 AM · Feb 7, 2026) that have dimensions larger than 2048.

Some clients downscale when uploading. The app for example doesn't upload 4096x images by default, you have to enable it. This also isn't new behavior.

i still think the wording on the wiki should be changed because it sounds like you don't have to check the dimensions because they will be the same quality but if this depends on the client the artist used then you DO have to check the dimensions because the pixiv (if there is one) will have the best quality
