The tag histories don't show evidence of you fixing the parenting. If you did try to fix it, that means your edits did nothing and it wasn't broken in the first place.

Hi Blank, apologies for the confusion there. Correct, I did not take any action fix the parenting (yet). I wanted to better understand what happens to post relationships for deleted posts, so as to not make errors because I didn't understand how the system handles things--which, is mostly why I posted here. It occurs to me now that these sorts of technical questions might be better asked elsewhere, so thank you for reaching out to help in spite of this.

Deleted posts are not shown as children of other posts by default, but you can make them visible by going to the Advanced tab in your profile settings and enabling Show Deleted Children. You can see this with post #8202412. You will only see one child listed if the option is disabled, but you will see two if it's enabled.

Yes, I understand that interaction-- In the case of approved parent, deleted child, the parent will not show a post relation (without the advanced setting) but the child will still show the post relationship by default. However, In this case, the posts being deleted were not children of the existing posts, but rather their parents, so the interaction is different. In this case, clicking on one of the (approved) child posts would correctly show their (deleted) parents by default, so nothing was broken in the immediate sense-- the child posts were correctly related to their parents, and the parents related to each-other. However, at some point deleted posts will actually get deleted, at which time the relationships that I had changed when I uploaded the new parents, would (possibly?) break. To phrase my question another way, I was wondering: if a post which had previously had a parent, and then had that parent changed, and then finally had their new parent deleted, would it automatically:

  • revert to the old parent
  • revert to having no parent at all
  • continue pointing at the (now empty) deleted parent

In this case, my preferred outcome would be reverting to point at the old parent, because in that case I wouldn't need to manually revert it. But, I wasn't sure how the system would handle this, and therefore what action (if any) I needed to take. Sorry that I didn't articulate that as clearly as I could have, and, again, apologies if this is not the place to be asking this kind of question, and thanks for your time helping.

What makes you think the posts will be permanently deleted? Posts and assets are only removed from the site when it's absolutely necessary, mainly when they are highly illegal to host. Your concern seems to be based mainly around the assumption that we're going to purge the status:deleted posts, which would be a massive departure from current site policy. I'm pretty sure the parenting would not be affected, so you don't need to worry.
