Why do some pages claim, lets say 10 images, but only show 7? Does it have to do with an account not choosing that $20 upgrade in the yellow rectangle?

Unless you do a status search as part of your search then any deleted images will take up spots without actually being visible.
For example, with 20 images per page bad_proportions gives 52 pages but bad_proportions -status:deleted gives just 41 - those other 11 pages of images would have been "invisible images", as you put it, in the first search.

Consider that DGKelly is also a Member level user.
So they won't see posts with status:banned, loli,shota and toddlercon.

There's a pretty detailed list of the differences between account level in help:users. Note that account types lower on the list have all of the features of any above them as well.
