Stance on higher resolution scan reuploads

Posted under General

Sorry for the clunky title but there wasn't any real way to compress it further than that.

I'm wondering what the stance is here if an artbook or primarily image based doujinshi that gets uploaded at a higher resolution and/or better scan quality than a previous scan, but the images of said previous scan have already been uploaded onto the site?

Is it frowned upon to be uploading images in this fashion? Or is it alright as long as the images are of markedly better quality or resolution?

It's alright. Danbooru strives for quality uploads, so your intention is very welcomed by us. Don't forget to parent the earlier post into the new, better quality uploads that you're talking about.

Could you give an example about what you mean? I think I get it, but it's better to discuss with something tangible^^.

I'm not sure of an example of this being done, but I can provide a scenario easily enough.

These images for example (both nsfw) post #2245352 and post #2245342. They're not awful scans, but they have a noticeable amount of artifacts. If a cleaner scan were ever put somewhere should the new images be uploaded, or just left?

It's a little trickier when it comes to resolution of course, just because a scan is higher resolution doesn't necessarily mean it's higher quality. But if the scans are of comparable quality but one is a significantly higher resolution, then again, would an upload of the newer scan be appropriate, or not?

Sorry if those aren't the most elucidating examples. This is something that I don't think has come up before, but I've actually commissioned a couple of better scans for some artbooks and wished to know so that I'm not blundering into something I shouldn't be doing.

I'd encourage such an act personally. Though, I'm biased since I do exactly what you talked about: See post #2467339 vs post #2464643, and have done for a long time.

Another example: post #2317084 vs post #1126604. In this case I just took an older, low quality scan I uploaded and cleaned it up with the techniques I learned in the years since.

Parent/child relationships for scans can be a bit tricky though. I know a lot of users default to making the scan the parent, even if it's less complete and the scan is rather dirty, simply because it is higher resolution. My personal stance is that if the resolution of the digital version has the same or more completeness (Nothing cropped out during the scanning process), and is sufficiently highres (Like 1500px high), and the scan isn't sufficiently cleaned or color/white balanced, I'll parent a scan to the digital version.
