The "shadowed" thing is some kind of bug, though it doesn't happen for me. It'll probably work correctly in the next version and show up as just black.

I don't. If I don't want to see mutilated body parts or someone taking a dump, I don't want to see it, even if it's shadowed.

I could not have said it better myself.
I'll third that notion.
When I blacklist something I don't ever want to see it. Letting it stick around either shadowed or blacked out defeats the purpose. The old method was far better of putting blacklisted posts out of sight and out of mind.

How is that defeating the purpose if you cannot see it? Unless you can still see the images faintly, it's doing its job very well. This new method is a lot more convenient for those who for whatever reason wants to see blacklisted pictures without disabling the blacklist tags.

Disabling the blacklist tags can be done just by toggling them in the upper right at your command. This is simple Javascript. When you want to search something, you don't want to have the idea of what could be behind those blacked out posts.
Which reminds me, I'd like it if the list of blacklisted tags are collapsible.
I can see why some would prefer this black squares blacklisting after reading the comments, but it makes me feel like I was living in some dictatorship and looking at a censored page, instead of a page where I presumably controlled myself what shows and what doesn't. If it's possible, I'd prefer a switch in the settings to go back to the old method. I practically never disable my blacklisting anyway as it's there for a reason.

As I said in an older post:
Let's say I want to see a particular pic that is blocked off due to my blacklisted tags. However, there is a possibility that turning off the tags that will reveal that pic will also reveal pics I do not want to see. This new blacklisting method fixes this by allowing you to click on a shadowed pic first and then letting you see what tags it has so that you can tell whether or not it is the pic you are looking for or decide if you want to see it.
Being able to get a "preview" of what tags a certain pic has without having to see the thumbnail first is extremely useful.

If you want to see one specific guro post but not all the guro posts
That's what I mean. The old method of disabling tags may make multiples pics with that tag show up, but with this new one, you can click on each of the shadowed pics and then look at the tags to see if you can find the one you want.

Not everyone that downloads a picture from here actually likes it. Also, most people download images by right-clicking so it won't mean much.
Then they could not tick the option?
On another note.. I've seen a number of perfectly okay images not approved and then deleted. If it's not approved by a moderator with x days or w/e can it just turn to the community to approve it? Like 5 approvals from different people or something approves it? Perhaps there could be a sub approval group of people that can approve images?
Blacklists seem to have changed today. An earlier post suggested it's a bug. It's a little annoying to see people saying they like this "new version", but I'll exercise empathy. There seem to be 2 groups of people, who use blacklists for 2 different things.
Blacklist
These people, myself included, do not ever want to see [loli], [shota], [furry], [guro], whatever. We do not want to know the image exists, and appreciate that unless we've toggled the blacklisted tag, the thumbnail is not even downloaded when loading a search page. We also appreciate that if we toggle a tag, it stays toggled for that browser session across pages.
Filter
Some people seem to be using blacklists, and the toggle feature, to know more about what's in an image before they click on it? These people appreciate the black-out behaviour that doesn't cause the whole list doesn't move about when you toggle a tag, making it easier to find newly revealed images. They also do this for every search page, so appreciate the resetting behaviour? I'm guessing a little here.

That's what I'm thinking. Some people are using the blacklists as a filter rather than a blacklist and don't mind features that further turn it into a filter even if it alienates other members.
If it's viable I'd like to see both blacklist methods be a togglable option in account settings so everyone can be happy.
I'd rather it just be that "Blacklisted" square icon (Gelbooru I believe uses this style when notifying about blacklisted images on a page) if they're just going to leave signs of blacklisted stuff on a page. I'm fine with there being nothing visible there was normally.
I just hope this isn't a permanent thing. and I use my Blacklist as a hard "I don't want to see things tagged X." instead of the filtering thing.
Interestingly enough what I have to presume is Lolicon/Shotacon images are still using standard invisible image behavior as I'm a regular poster still instead of this bug where there is just a black thing

Which is why I appreciate this change.
I would appreciate there being an option. I would however prefer that users be presented with the option of choosing which style they want when they add their first blacklist tag. I, for one, will be sticking with the new version. But I want the people who don't like this change to have it the way they like it.
However, I recall that transparent gifs that are resized tend to show up almost the same way as the new look of blacklisted images. I do hope that the blacklist override changes somewhat to deal with that issue.
New blacklist thing is weird but whatevs. Speaking of blacklists, I think that your favorites page should ignore the blacklists. After all, if you favorited an image in spite of its blacklisted tag, you want to see it (or it was just plain tagged incorrectly). I have yuri blacklisted but I still have favorited a minority of pictures tagged with it.
And you might as well show deleted posts you favorited as well.

-1 on favorites ignoring the blacklist; I like being able to hide pornographic favorites when I'm not in the mood for them.
