A swivel chair is actually pretty easy to handle: you just need to make sure you're not putting torsion on the chair as you get on, such as by putting your feet right on top of the axis. No lateral forces, no torsion, no spinning, plain and simple.
I have to stand on one every time I want to change the bulbs in my overhead light, so I've had practice :D
