Yeah but Futo's a Stage 5 Boss and that group is usually popular, except Shou.
I guess that since most S-5 bosses are "helpers" to the S-6 final boss, let alone having interesting story flows around them that is directly connected to the main story, while having fairly interesting powers and/or interesting character design.
Sakuya's got her time manipulation, Youmu's a samurai, Reisen's a bunny girl, etc.
And Rin. Quite the opposite really since most people hated them. As bosses I mean.
Well while teh stage 5 bunch are dreaded as bosses, they happen to be some of the more popular characters.
I would say Shou's issue is that she doesn't stand out as much compared to those in the past, but more than Ichirin.
I think Orin's rather popular though breaking the deadlock of classic characters is hard.
I think at the time of this, Miko's popularity hasn't really gotten going and Futo? Hermit Moe, nuff said (even the revelation of being a pyromanic only added to her charm). Tojiko is in a rought spot as her main traits (lighting and shapely ghost) are already covered by Iku for hte first and Yuyuko and Mima for the other.

I wish Shou and Mamizou'd have ranked higher. The two are amongst my favorites -3-
Sad but true, even in the west it's like that though unlike japan, the newer characters don't get much made on them compared to the 'classics'
