Laser/magic guns have always looked weird though, so I don't see what the problem is.
It's the fact that it makes no physical sense. The stock is in a spot where you wouldn't be able to aim the thing, the scope is misaligned so it couldn't possibly be used, the handgrips are in a spot that makes no physical sense for someone with working hands, and so on.

In the series, I think she didn't even use the stock, she held it under her arm as she looked through the scope. And it looked recoilless, so the stock is practically superfluous, as is the forward grip.
Plus, pretty much the whole world is stark raving mad at that point, so don't bother trying to find sense in that thing, let alone what it does (violently rape causality in the ass, basically).
The stock actually houses the fuel source which is a large number of miniature black holes suspended in a plasma of neutral material. It acts as a bellows and must be squeezed by the armpit to force a miniature black hole into the chamber. From there, the user needs to twist the forward valve so the magical sigils that focus the inward energy of the black hole into a quantum anti-standard time field. Looking through the scope actually is looking into the box of Shroedinger's Cat and determining if it REALLY IS dead all without observing it. The scope just knows. The trigger mechanism locks the black hole and releases the now generated magitek time warp spell through the barrel and through the green glowing filter. When the trigger is reset then the bellows released, the miniature black hole is shunted through a secondary bypass to the back of the stock to recover its exhausted quantum time-warp. Takes about 10 minutes ago to recover. From the size of that stock, I would say there is about 20/0 black holes.
