i'm unsure if vivisection is the right term here since it doesn't look like anything related to medical procedure/scientific research. slashing seems more appropriate. but if i'm mistaken, please do correct me. thanks.

I agree on it not being vivisection, though. I don't think it needs to be strictly scientifical, but rather that it needs the precision required for it.

I believe the term for this sort of split-down-the-middle business is "bifurcation."
