Well I'm not sure I could recommend getting covered in Conversion gel after what happend to Cave Johnson, but it could've just been exposure to the moon rocks or an ingredient, rather that the gel it'self...

He died because of the moon dust, not the gel. The sickness is called pneumoconiosis and happens when you breathe in too much dust. Happens to miners IRL.
