The Force Armor could easily be a Force-enhanced armor. Meaning it's like an ordinary armor, but the Force barrier makes it extra effective against magic attacks.

Which would mean the Paladin Shield's also Force-enhanced.

This is coming a bit late, but for those wondering why this equipment set is popular, Magic Evasion.
Regular Evasion in the original SNES version is useless, it all goes into Magic Evasion.
Force Armor would boost M.Eva up, yes. However, 1: it can be equipped by anyone and 2: it would push M.Eva over the limit with the equipment Celes has on already.
