Maybe I'm overthinking this after browsing through most of Misleading Thumbnails, but I see a reference to the three major Greek gods. You've got France with a trident, symbolizing Poseidon; Prussia with his bird for the sky god Zeus; and Spain with devil imagery (horn-like hair, Southern Italy's ahoge placed so it looks like a long tail) for Hades.
