Just simply picking up a giant coin like he did a gazillion times in the games or is he doing something far less innocent?

What Luigi is doing can be done in the game by putting your mushroom-powered character over the coin icon.

The coin is supposed to be his balls or "kintama" (lit. "golden balls")
