Are you sure you're not caching the bad thumbnail? If it's good for one person, it should be good for everyone; the sample thumbnail is only generated a single time on the server, not dynamically for each request.
Leaving it in the pool for now, because I might be mistaken about the nature of the problem here, but the thumbnail is good for me, too.
There's another image that I'd have to dig through my comments history to find where the thumbnail alternates between broken and working and has been for months.
