This is very true here and, therefore, pretty confusing if you´re new to the ways of Gensokyo (canon or not).
At first, I was like "Since when Byakuren is Nue´s follower?". It wasn´t until I read half the thing that I noticed the arrows are kind of, ummm, pointing in reverse? At least, some of them. It doesn´t apply to all.

I think the arrows are more like a "My ..... is" Like Yukari's arrow to Chen in "Lowest Minion", so that means that "Yukari's lowest minion is Chen". The same with Byakuren's arrow to Nue, implying that "Byakuren's follower is Nue".

You might have gotten your canon wrong here.
All the fairies we've met in the stories can read. Luna and Sunny are reading newspaper in their manga. (OSP ch9) Mystia is reading to the fairies from a book (OSP ch13)
And where does it say she's "more intelligent than most other fairies"? The three fairies wrote 参上 on their flag and Cirno answered in poorly written hiragana.
